away, we're taking a very in depth look all week long at latinos in america, which is a key voting bloc in this election. this is the latest cnn orc poll of latino voters. president obama, the clear favorite over mitt romney, leading 70% to 26%. you can fairly say that's not even close and it is well outside the margin of error and that's critical because you know there is a saying that there is power in numbers. at least 12.2 million people expected to show up at the polls on election day. but that's barely half of latinos who are eligible to vote. and it could come down to location, location, location. the hispanic vote could be the deciding factor in several states, including the swing state of nevada. which is where miguel marquez takes us in the battle to win their vote. >> reporter: it might sound like mexico. but this is the fight for the white house. welcome to washo county, nevada, the front line in this battleground state. washo county's 250,000 voters are expected to decide whether the nevada goes blue or red. and latinos, about 30,000 votes here, could make the critical diff

that came out, cnn-orc poll. latino voters choice for the president. whopping 70% chose president obama compared with 26 terz for mitt romney. romney here is doing worse than john mccain did back in 2008 who got 31%. the latino vote. also worse than george w. bush in 2004 who got 44% of the latino. anna, to you. is there anything at this point that romney can do to get the latino support up? >> well, suzanne, i think praying on novina might help. look, he -- we had a tough primary on the republican side. i think mitt romney has been an unknown commodity to his hispani hispanics. he doesn't come from a border state like john mccain or george w. bush did. he has not done a great intense voter outreach with the latinos because he ran out of money after the primary. he -- let me just be absolutely truthful and give smu straight talk as john mccain would say. mitt romney dug himself into a hole with latinos during the primary. he said some things that are coming back to haunt him. he now needs to find a way to dig himself out of that hole. i think the only way he will do it is if he really c

spends talking about for two weeks. african american and latino voters are very important. i want every american to vote. they are not voting for mitt romney. when you look at numbers like are you more favorable about this candidate the president and romney have parallel numbers among white voters. these huge margins are because overwhelmingly 78 to 4 african americans are saying less likely. if you are losing 100% of the vote it doesn't effect the ballot. so the difference in this poll is you have to look at the valid coalition compared to the numbers you are using from this survey. that explains how you can have the negative numbers from romney and have him going up in the poll compared to two weeks ago mpt. >> i want to go to candidate qualities thmpt president has leads on looking after the middle class, dealing with immigration and medicare. single digit on health care, being a good commander in chief, foreign policy and taxes. of all of those qualities, the two that would concern you the most if you were mitt romney? >> the one you didn't mention is mitt romney is ahead on changin

that we've got the latino locked up, we've got the women locked up we can then throw latina women over whelmingly the domestic workers under the bus. jerry brown should not have vetoed that bill. it's democrats taking advantage of the fact that right now latinos and women don't feel they can go to the republican party. the sickness in the republican party on these issues is -- jerry brown should be ashamed of himself. >> don't you think that's a broader pattern in the democratic party? >> it could be. >> you have social issues a lot of places are trumping economic issues. even in new york andrew cuomo maybe signed the bill you're describing, but when cuomo wants to shore up his base, he does gaye marriage and when he wants to come to the marriage, this is something economic liberals should be concerned about that social liberalism is sort of the only liberalism that really matters. >> and i'm delighted that van brought jerry brown up. one, i think van is right. the democratic party does take advantage of its constituencies. i would argue it's taken advantage of latinos for a long time.

latinos in 2008. look, this is a problem in this election for republicans, andrea, but a bigger problem in 2016, 2020 and beyond. the hispanic community is obviously a young community, it's a growing community, it's a community that's going to register to vote more in line with their population numbers in years to come. republicans simply cannot lose the hispanic vote by 40, 50 points. they can't even lose it by 20 points. people like jeb bush, marco rubio who you showed earlier they understand that. i think the party needs to have a reckoning with where they are in immigration and courting hispanics. numbers like that, mitt romney maybe can win with a number like that, possibly nationally, but i will tell you in 2016, 2020 and beyond the party nominee will be hard pressed to win losing hispanic business that kind of margin. >> and finally, how big a deal is joe biden saying that the middle class has been buried for the last four years? >> yeah. >> republicans are going to make a big deal out of it. >> and are making a big deal out of it. web video this morning, you played paul ryan's c

really have a huge turnout, latino voters, the numbers are there, but the enthusiasm, at least according to the polling, shows that the republicans have the advantage and that's why this race remains tight for romney. what's your take on this high-interest and enthusiasm, at least if the numbers are right, higher among republicans? >> i think at the beginning of the year, it was a real problem for democrat, i think the republicans led in high interest or enthusiasm by 10, 12%. now if that poll is correct it is down to 2%, which is statistically insignificant. i think since the convention, democratic interest has gone way up and republican interest has gone down slightly. so, i think it is not going to be much of a difference, 75% republicans, 73% democrats vote, the president wins in all those battleground states, democrats have a registration. the president wins, maybe even going away in those states. so i think the enthusiasm gap that exists in the beginning of the year has been pretty much narrowed, tamron. >> it is interesting. i want to talk about your home state you pennsylvania, o

a massive lead with women and latino voters. can you explain that? >> i mean, the main thing in both florida, ohio, every state, romney leads among men. and he's -- about a month -- two weeks ago the polls were broadly for obama. now it's closing a bit because of the male part. white males tend to be republican voters and they're coming back to romney a little bit after a bit. in ohio they're not. seems as if in ohio the bain capital message has sunk in. virginia, florida, the white vote will go to romney. >> what struck you about that apparent contradiction in the polling? >> i think you saw a little bit of that bounce kind of come down after the post-convention. you're seeing it sort of return to a place where it was very tight. you saw aa shift among independents in florida, which is what made up a lot of that shift. the striking thing about all three polls is how few persuadable voters there are. that's what these debates are usually about but it may wind up be something to turn out the base and fire up some of their people. >> one of the issue, i put this to both of you, one of the prob
